The Construction Leadership Field Manual
This book provides aspects of leadership training that many in the construction industry do not receive. It helps bridge the generational gap between construction veterans and their younger successors in an effort to transfer institutional knowledge and create strong construction leaders for tomorrow. Said simply, this book is meant to tackle the human side of construction leadership. Its contents are broken into four modules: Motivation, Communication, Culture, and Coaching. Module 1 dives into the psychology of motivation and how to harness the motivation of your workers for improved performance. Module 2 discusses the underrated value of effective feedback, how to hear and be heard by your employees, and how to have crucial conversations for employee growth. In Module 3, you will learn how to best tailor your leadership style based on employee generational differences, the power of positive peer pressure, and how to create an optimal workplace climate. Finally, Module 4 teaches you how to build future leaders by coaching your employees for optimal performance and modeling what right looks like.
There is a real crisis in the construction industry today.
There’s high turnover rates, lack of skilled labor, employment shortage, poor communication, and transfer of skills just to name a few. Ultimately, you lose money when you lose good employees, making you feel frustrated and worried about the future.
The Problem
High turnover, low employment pool, poor communication, and difficulty transferring knowledge.
Construction companies are seeing higher rates of turnover as well as fewer skilled workers, leading to a labor shortage.
40% of the construction workforce is predicted to be retired in 5 to 8 years.
Transferring skills from established workers to new recruits can be time-consuming and profit-limiting.
